Free Mix: Dennis Coffey's History Of Funk

Am 21. April erscheint gänzlich unerwartet ein Album von Dennis Coffey. Yep, genau der, legendärer Gitarrist der Motown-Houseband Funk Brothers und exakt der Mann, dessen dreckig-psychedelische WahWah-Gitarre nicht nur bei den Temptations der Norman Whitfield-Ära oder Edwins Starrs „War“ zu hören war, sondern auch bei Funkadelic und Isley Brothers.
Als Solokünstler hatte er während all der Jahre weniger Glück, am ehesten erinnert man sich noch an seinen 1974er Blaxploitation-Score „Black Belt Jones“. Dennoch legt er jetzt nach mehr als zwanzig Jahren tatsächlich wieder ein unbetiteltes Soloalbum vor, das seinen Zeiten als Studio-Crack des Detroit-Soul Reverenz erweist.
Und zwar mit imposanten Gästen, mit denen er Highlights seines eigenen Backkatalogs auffrischt. So covert er mit Mayer Hawthorne The Parliaments und mit Orgone-Röhre Fanny Franklin eine Nummer von Wilson Pickett. Auch zu hören sind die NeoFunker Kings Go Forth und die furiose Lisa Kekaula von den Bellrays, wie auch Mick Collins (Dirtbombs) gemeinsam mit Rachel Nagy (Detroit Cobras), die Funkadelic covern.
Um die Wartezeit bis zum Erscheinen zu verkürzen, wirbt das verantwortliche Label Strut mit diesem Mix, den der Detroiter DJ House Shoes zusammengeschraubt hat.

Including the psychedelic b-boy soul of Coffey's 70's solo material, classic recordings on which he recorded as a sessions musician, hip-hop cuts which have sampled his material, and even a couple of sneak peaks at the new album's music, Constellations is 45 minutes of straight heat, mixed by a master DJ intimately acquainted with Coffey's legacy, and his future.
